Choosing a Ladder Made Easy: A Quick Guide

Finding the perfect ladder can feel a bit daunting, especially with the wide variety of types and sizes available on the market today. However, using the correct ladder for the task is crucial—not only for efficiency but also for your safety. Here’s a simple guide to help you pick the most suitable ladder for your needs:

Step 1: Determine the Appropriate Ladder Type

Your first move should be selecting the ladder style that best suits the work you’re doing. Each ladder type is designed with specific features that help enhance stability, comfort, and safety during use.

The most commonly used types include step ladders and extension ladders. While these may seem like a one-size-fits-all solution, there are many other specialized ladder types that could serve your task better and more safely. These include platform ladders, telescoping ladders, step-extension models, tripod ladders, and more.

For instance, when the job requires you to be on a ladder for an extended time, a platform ladder is a better option. It provides a broader standing surface, offering increased comfort and reducing fatigue—unlike the narrow steps of a traditional step ladder.

When working at height, such as accessing a roof, an extension ladder is the recommended choice due to its reach and stability.

Step 2: Choose the Correct Ladder Height

To ensure the ladder you select meets your height requirements, begin by measuring the maximum point you need to reach. Subtract your own height and an estimated vertical reach of about 30cm from that number. Then, add approximately 90cm to the result—this will give you the ideal ladder height for your task.

It's also important to consider your working position. Whether you’re working overhead, at chest height, or waist level, always ensure you can maintain three points of contact with the ladder for safety.

When using extension ladders, the top of the ladder must extend at least 1 metre above the edge of the roof or landing point. Also remember the standard positioning rule: place the ladder 1 metre out for every 4 metres of height to maintain a stable and safe angle.

Step 3: Understand Load Capacity and Duty Rating

Each ladder is built to handle a certain amount of weight, which includes your body weight plus any tools, equipment, or materials you carry while climbing or working on it.

Ladders are classified based on their duty rating, which indicates their load-bearing capability and intended use:

  • Industrial-grade ladders: Suitable for professional or heavy-duty tasks, with a minimum load rating of 120kg.
  • Domestic-grade ladders: Designed for light household use, with a minimum rating of 100kg.

In Australia, for any type of professional or worksite use, you must use a ladder that carries an Industrial duty rating with at least 120kg capacity to comply with safety regulations.

Step 4: Choose the Right Ladder Material

The last consideration is material, especially if you might be working near live electrical sources. In such situations, fibreglass ladders are recommended as they are non-conductive and provide better protection against electric shocks. If electrical hazards are not a concern, aluminium ladders are a lightweight and cost-effective alternative.
